A Day in Amsterdam October 2009

Took the ferry to Holland and had a day in Amsterdam - it was uncharaceteristically warm so most of the day was spent outdoors, wandering around and exploring Amsterdam.

It was a cold and wet day, so what to do indoors? We could have gone for the cultural option, but instead opted for a tour of the coffee shop for a few beers. There's plenty to choose from and you can easily meander your way from one to another for a whole afternoon. In most, you just take a seat and are served by a waiter/waitress at your table... how cvilised! No need to pay the bill until you leave either - remembering of course to give a tip. Prices aren't as cheap as they used to be, but they're more or less on a par with the UK.

Not wanting to spend all day in a bar, we also took a canal boat tour (from the place nearest the central station - can't remember what it's called). Took around and hour and was a nice way to see the city, and learn something about the history. It was quiet (only about five of us onboard) which was nice. Only thing is there was no toilet onboard - not great after a few pints!

Been to Amsterdam a few times, but next time will be for a couple of days - one isn't enough and you don't want to leave. And, an overnight stop gives you a chance to sample the nightlife, which has something for everyone!
